Growing to Meet Community Needs

Shawnee’s Board of Directors approved the agency’s FY2020-2022 strategic plan at its June, 2019 board meeting. Prior to the approval of the plan, the board reviewed the Center’s accomplishments outlined in its FY2014-2019 plan.  I am pleased to share with you that Shawnee has accomplished all of the following objectives over the last few years:

  • Established a marketing program to help ensure that our communities know about services provided;
  • Implemented same day access for mental health services so anyone can just walk in and see a mental health professional when needed;
  • Expanded office space & parking in Adams County to accommodate the increase in people requesting services;
  • Established an on-site pharmacy for the convenience of those we serve;
  • Became a provider of substance use disorder services; and
  • Received designation as a Federally Qualified Health Center – Look-alike

Since we continually strive to enhance our services, we have established additional goals for the coming years designed to improve access to care for the communities we serve.  We plan to implement transportation services so that patients without adequate transportation to appointments and community organizations have this available to them. We also have plans to establish a variety of housing options:  one is a 45 unit apartment complex for youth aging out of foster care/homeless youth; the second is a smaller unit for adults with serious and persistent mental illness.  We understand that quality housing is vital for good emotional and physical health.

We also plan to ensure that we have the ability to serve all people that are requesting services.  To do this we are working to recruit additional staff in all departments and making sure that no clinical staff person’s workload is more than he/she can reasonably manage. This will be a challenge since the pool of professional candidates in our region continues to decrease as fewer young people are selecting social work and counseling as careers. We are also planning to introduce new services to better meet the needs of the communities we serve.

We are proud of our history of caring for the people in Adams, Lawrence and Scioto Counties in Ohio over the past 46 years.  On behalf of everyone at Shawnee, thank you for choosing us; whether you are receiving mental health care services, physical health care services,  or supported employment , we want to be your partner in helping you achieve your health and wellness goals.
